Lawrence was one of the first to devote himself to pictorializing the history of Black people in America.

Artist Jacob Lawrence (1917–2000) was one of the first to devote himself to pictorializing the history of Black people in America. For Kunsthal KAdE, Mayra & Sam designed the exhibition catalogue.
Kunsthal KAdE shows the first retrospective exhibition in Europe of the African-American artist Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000). He developed his own autonomous painting style in the twilight years of the Harlem Renaissance and is considered one of the most important African-American painters of the 20th century.
The carefully designed exhibition catalog, published in two languages, is a vibrant publication that showcases Lawrence's work prominently on its pages. The colors are directly inspired by Lawrence's palette: soft shades of pink and green in the interior combine with the powerful, saturated colors on the covers. The modern typography subtly references the era in which Lawrence worked; the monotype font echoes the graphic notes from his sketchbooks.
